Maremma Sheepdogs are independant, courageous, and intelligent. As a companion dog, they may act may be stubbornly if you do not pay close attention to them and treat them with respect. They also get along well with other pets, protective and good. They will guard other pets. They are independent, affectionate, and have a working mentality.
Grooming:
Breed has all weather/season coat and will require frequent and through combings and brushings. Very well furnished. Hair is long and rather harsh.

Origin of The Maremma Sheepdog
The history of the Maremma Sheepog from Italy that can be traced back over 2000 years. Two regions within Italy have always claimed this dog as their own, the Maremma and the Abruzzo, hence the breeds other name " Maremmano Abruzzese". The Maremma Sheepdog was originally bred to be a guarding dog, and has well served its purpose in the past and current to guard sheep and cattle from wolves, foxes and various other predators. The breed comes from other flock guarding breeds such as the Karabash and Akbash dogs of Turkey, the Kuvasz and Komondor of Hungary, the Kuvac of Slovakia, and the Pyrenees Mountain Dog of France. Today the breed has become more well known, but the breed is not recognized by the AKC.
Description Of The Maremma Sheepdog
The Maremma Sheepdog is a majestic white dog breed. They are strong, active, and rather graceful for their large size. They have triangular drop ears and jet black lips, nose and eyes. They have a rich but managable coat with a long tail that nearly touches the ground. The Maremma Sheepdog can be rather independent, especially in its work. They are a working dog and need a job to keep them occupied. Their function has been to guard the flock and property of the shepherd for nearly a millennia. As a companion dog, the Maremma Sheepdogs are devoted to their master but treat them as an equal and partner. They are a particularly affectionate breed; however, if mistreated the Maremma they will always remember it. The Maremma Sheepdog does not like to be dominated, and often do not do well in obediance courses.
